Man that's a very significant amount of savings/investment to income ratio there! But then again you have a successful company, so that'd be a realistic result. You remind me that having more money will only magnify someone's habits. If you have good money habits now, your money will grow exponentially when your business grows. Otherwise, you might still end up broke even if you win a lottery!

Email me when you hit 75%!

"Because I didn't understand money."

It's true, that rings clearly for myself as well. No matter how much I earned, and despite earning more and more with each passing year, I find myself NEVER HAVING ENOUGH.

It just was never enough.

Somehow or rather, money just 'leaks' out, something just happens, there is a need there, a need to fix this, a need to fix that. And even if i saved x amount this month, somehow I'd need to use that saved x amount from last month for the following month!

This continued for two years for myself, until like you, i began to reflect more, think more, and studied more about the characteristics of money.

Today, i 'basketise' my money, or you can call it compartmentalise my money. I found out that you do it too, Ken. But not as many as 18 account though =p not yet la.

I pay myself 25% first, of which 15% is savings, and 10% investment fund, 10% tithe, 10% parents, and live on the 45% remainder. However, as my income grows, I will keep increasing the amount I pay to myself, with an aim to reach at least 75%. =)

Hey Matha, thanks for sharing your story with us. It's common to have people coming for you for money when you get huge windfall, either a lottery or in your case, a severance. But there's really no point fighting over what you can't change and living with the guilty feelings forever. What's done is done, and from your story it seems like you've already learned the lesson, although the hard way (don't we all?).

But I don't think it's too late for you! It's never too late to start doing something to improve your life. If you were working in a Parastatal and got paid more than a million dollars, I'm sure you have some skills to make a living somewhere else?

Stop thinking about the past and live the present. Ask yourself how you can get a better career and have a better life. Many times it's our psychology that stops us from moving forward in life, not the actual circumstances.

So, start small, but think big. Hope this helps. All the best to you and please keep me posted!

What you have said is very true. I was retrenched from a Parastatal and paid more than a million which could have enabled me to lead a very comfortable and good life without having to work. I paid debts with the money and somehow, though I did not spent it on luxuries, I don't have the money and cannot account for it. Okay, I continued with my bad habit of assisting my siblings and could even lend out money. All the people I lent out money to don't even pay back and instead, they use me as an example. My own family members tell me that I am an embarrassment to my family since I am really struggling as a first born.

Right now as I write this mail, I am fighting with painful guilty feelings and working with a Company where I am paid peanuts, shouted at all the time and told that I should resign. I cannot for the time being as I have many responsibilities.

Sometimes you learn the hard way when it is too late.

Tiff, I've just tested the link and it worked. Anyway, I've just sent out an email to my subscribers with the link again. Try turning off your Adblock if you're using Firefox.

If it still doesn't work, let me know!
