The Law of Focus: Stop Jumping at Every Opportunity and Be the Best at What You Do

2 Comments 14 December 2009

The law of focus is one of the most important marketing laws. To run a successful business, a company must focus all its energy on its single most important area. Take Fedex for example, its entire business focuses on delivering packages overnight. If you absolutely, definitely have to send your packages to someone overnight, go to Fedex. Fedex owns the word ‘overnight’, nobody else can use that word effectively.
The same principle should apply to us. When you’re presented with many opportunities, choose the best one with the information available at the time and stick to it. Learn as much about it and work at it with all your heart and soul. In short, own it as if there’s no tomorrow. Of course, you will have to know when to stop if it isn’t working out for you. I’d think 6 months to 1 year is a good range for you to determine if it’s well worth the effort.
When I’m faced with few new and exciting opportunities in the Internet space, I keep myself open to various possibilities but also remain focused on what I’m doing – providing great content. It’s too easy to deviate from the most important thing and waste a lot of time on things that don’t really help you grow.
Don’t be a jack of all trades and master of none. Few people want to hire a person who are not great in anything. Most people want to work with a person who’s at the top of his field. Steven Spielberg is the best in movie directing, and his movies earn a fortune. Google is the best in search engine, and its market share is the highest. Apple is the best in music players, and so everybody wants an iPod or iPhone.
Be the best at something and you’ll be rewarded.
Think about it and leave a comment below about what you’re going to be the best at.
